"COMMODITY AESTHETICS" IN THE PRACTICE OF MODERN RESIDENTIAL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT IN KUTA BALI

Abstract
Modern housing is developing and acceptable in the community of Kuta Bali. This residential product prioritizes "commodity aesthetic"; only concerned with the principle of geometric firmness without considering the deeper essence of housing. The purpose of this study is to reveal the factors underlying acceptable modern residential design in the Kuta Bali community; and the charm of commodity aesthetics in modern residential design. The research approach used was the cultural studies. The location of the research data is in the Kuta area. To understand and interpret the data, theories of consumerism and semiotics are used. The results of the study reveal that modern housing is accepted in the Kuta Bali community because of the influence of lifestyle. The charm of this dwelling is simplicity of design, geometric firmness, clean, industrial image, and avoiding the use of non-functional ornaments and old forms.
